How to Remove Blood Stains

17/04/2023 - Stain Removal Tips

It’s always a rush to stop the bleeding as soon as you notice the first drop, so it doesn’t fall onto any kind of fabric – but blood stains are not impossible to get out!

Blood stains are typically more stubborn than others due to its organic properties. Filled with proteins, blood is conditioned to bind together when heated. This therefore makes it set fast into our clothes and fabrics, ultimately resulting in a stubborn stain.

However, there are simple solutions to making your garments and upholsteries stain-free once again. It’s important to remember to use the care instructions as your benchmark, but here is your comprehensive guide to removing blood stains.

Top Tips to Remove Blood Stains

  • ACT FAST: Fresh blood will be easier to remove than dried blood so it’s always better to act fast when you notice the first sign of a stain.
  • RINSE WITH COLD WATER: Always rinse with cold water as this helps the blood break down. As mentioned above, heat will set the stain so never use warm or hot water to rinse.

How to Remove Blood Stains from Coloured Clothes

Whether you accidently get some blood on a dark piece of clothing or it stains one of your favourite pieces of your colourful wardrobe, have no fear!

  1. Rinse with cold water on both the inside and the outside of the garment.
  2. Blot the affected area with wet kitchen roll or cotton towel.
  3. Pre-treat the stain with ACE for Colours Spray before washing as usual with a capful of ACE for Colours in the drum of your washing machine.

If you have a blood stain on your jeans, remember to turn your jeans inside out and apply the stain remover directly to the stain that way – this will be much more effective.

How to Remove Blood Stains from White Clothes

This process is very similar to the one above, however instead of using ACE for Colours, we recommend using ACE for Whites instead. It will keep your whites cleaner for longer and, by adding ACE Ultra for Whites to your wash, it will revive the whiteness even more!

  1. Rinse with cold water on both the inside and the outside of the garment.
  2. Blot the affected area with wet kitchen roll or cotton towel.
  3. Pre-treat the stain with ACE for Whites Spray before adding to your wash with your usual detergent and ACE Ultra for Whites.

No matter where the blood stain came from, you will be able to get it out of your sheets or pillowcases, even once it’s dried.

  1. Rinse with cold water on both the inside and outside of the bedsheets, and then soak for an extended period of time in cold water.
  2. For white bed linen, apply ACE for Whites Stain Remover Spray directly to the stain. For coloured bed linen, apply ACE for Colours Stain Remover Spray directly to the stain.
  3. Put the bed linen on a cool wash and air dry.

How to Remove Blood Stains from a Mattress

If the blood on your sheets has soaked through to your mattress, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how you can remove it simply and effectively:

  1. Apply hydrogen peroxide or ACE for Colours Stain Remover Spray onto a sponge.
  2. Dab this directly onto the stain, using gentle pressure but not rubbing or friction.
  3. Once the stain has been removed, rinse with cold water and a clean cloth.
  4. Make sure the mattress is completely rinsed and dry before you use it again.

How Can I Remove Dried Blood Stains?

It’s always better to treat fresh blood stains as dried blood stains are tougher to remove. You will have to use something stronger than soap and water to break down the stain like hydrogen peroxide – and luckily, ACE for Colours contains just the ingredient!

  1. Remove any solid parts of the stain using a blunt object so you don’t damage the fabric.
  2. Spray ACE for Colours Stain Remover Spray directly onto the stain and leave it for 5 minutes to soak in.
  3. Blot with a paper towel, then rub gently with a clean damp cloth.
  4. Repeat this process until the stain is gone.
  5. Rinse with cold water until all the ACE for Colours has been washed out.
