14/06/2023 - Stain Removal Tips

Summer is finally here and although enjoying the sunny, warm weather and everything to do with this beautiful season is exciting, there’s no getting away from summer stains. But don’t let them get you down!

At ACE, we’ve got all the tips you need to remove common stains around this time of year so your wardrobe can still look as good as new.

1. Ice Cream Stains

Who doesn’t love a cold treat on a hot day? From children to adults, ice cream is a dessert loved by all! With the hot sun melting it at a faster rate though, ice cream stains are inevitable, so here’s what to do if it gets on your clothes:

  • Scrape off any excess ice cream and rinse under cold water.
  • Then, pre-treat with ACE for Colours Stain Remover Spray and leave for 5 minutes.
  • Add your usual detergent and a capful of ACE for Colours to your load of washing and start the wash straight away.

2. Ice Lolly Stains

Another firm family favourite are ice lollies. Refreshing and colourful, they’re popular amongst children but be warned, the danger of a vibrant drip of colour falling on their clothes is high!

  • Blot the liquid and rinse under cold water.
  • Then, pre-treat with ACE for Colours Stain Remover Spray and leave for 5 minutes.
  • Add your usual detergent and a capful of ACE for Colours to your load of washing and start the wash straight away.

3. Fruit Juice Stains

It’s important to stay hydrated during the summer season and any type of fruit juice is bound to quench your thirst – even eating the actual fruit too! You may panic when you first notice a fruit juice stain, but have no fear.

  • Gently blot the stain to soak up any excess liquid with a clean cloth or paper towel.
  • Rinse with cold water then treat the stain with equal parts white vinegar and water.
  • Wash as usual straight away and voila!

4. Cocktail Stains

Pretend you’re on holiday in your garden with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other. Doesn’t that sound dreamy? Or maybe have a garden party with your friends where you’re serving summery cocktails for everyone to enjoy. Here’s what to do if you find any cocktail stains in any scenario:

  • Use a clean cloth or paper towel to soak up any liquid and rinse under cold water.
  • Then, pre-treat with ACE for Colours Stain Remover Spray and leave for 5 minutes.
  • Add your usual detergent and a capful of ACE for Colours to your load of washing and start the wash straight away.

5. Red Wine Stains

Another way to pretend you’re on holiday is with a lovely glass of red wine. Maybe you’re in the wine region of Italy or France, or chilling in your own private vineyard. Even if you’re on holiday, that doesn’t mean your immune to spills. Here’s what to do:

  • For whites: For large stains, machine wash the garment with 150ml of ACE Ultra for Whites liquid. For small stains, pre-treat with ACE for Whites Spray and leave for 5 minutes to soak in before adding to your wash as usual.
  • Top Tip: Hang your whites outside to dry as the sunshine will help with stain removal too.
  • For colours: Follow the same instructions for white clothes but add a capful of ACE for Colours liquid to your machine wash for large stains and pre-treat small stains with ACE for Colours Stain Remover Spray.

6. Cooking Oil Stains

Summertime means it’s time for BBQs, salads and other light bites! When cooking with oil or adding oily vinaigrettes to salads or dipping your bruschetta into olive oil, these are all stain hazards you need to be aware of. Here’s what to do if you accidentally get any on your clothes:

  • For oil and grease, we recommend using ACE for Colours liquid which is specifically formulated to tackle greasy stains on both white and coloured clothing.
  • For a machine wash: Simply add your detergent as usual, then pour a capful of ACE for Colours liquid directly on top of your clothes in the washing machine drum and start the wash straight away.
  • For a hand wash: Pour 100ml of ACE for Colours liquid to your usual detergent. Then, add the laundry and let it soak for 1 hour before rinsing thoroughly.

7. Tomato Ketchup Stains

Chips, burgers, hot dogs, kebabs; tomato ketchup goes with everything on your BBQ. Unfortunately, it can also make its way onto your clothing which can be a nightmare to get out. Here’s how you can remove tomato ketchup stains from your clothes:

  • Remove any excess sauce from your clothing and rinse with cold water.
  • Pre-treat the stain with ACE for Colours or ACE for Whites Stain Remover Spray and leave for 5 minutes.
  • Add to your washing load as normal and, for an extra boost of stain removal, either add a capful of ACE for Colours liquid or 150ml of ACE Ultra for Whites liquid to your wash (alongside your usual detergent).

Top Tip: This method is the same for removing barbeque sauce stains from clothes.

8. Mustard Stains

Some people love ketchup on their hot dogs and some people like mustard – and some people like both! Turmeric gives mustard the vibrant yellow colour its renowned for, but this is also what makes mustard stain garments. If you get mustard on your clothes, here’s what to do:

  • Mix a teaspoon of washing up liquid with 1 cup of lukewarm water.
  • Blot this mixture into the stain with a clean white cloth.
  • Rinse and repeat until the stain is removed. Then, dry in the sunshine.
  • Alternatively, simply cover the stain with our ACE for Colours or ACE for Whites Stain Remover Spray and after 5 minutes of soaking in, add the item of clothing to your wash as usual.

9. Deodorant Stains

Everyone is trying to stay fresh and clean in the heat, so deodorant is on overload. How annoying is it when you put a top on and it’s covered in deodorant stains though? Don’t worry, your t-shirt isn’t ruined! Here’s how to get rid of the stain:

  • Whether the stain is old or new, pre-treat it with a stain remover spray like ACE for Colours or ACE for Whites Stain Remover Spray.
  • Then, pour a capful of ACE for Colours liquid directly on top of your clothes in the washing machine drum and start the cycle straight away. Don’t forget, stains can be removed from low temperatures such as 30 degrees when using ACE for Colours!

10. Grass Stains

No matter what age you are, it’s always fun having a run and play around in the sunshine. Even when the kids come up to you with grass stains on their knees; although it’s annoying, it does bring you back to being that age. They’re not impossible to remove, so here’s how you do it:

  • Create a mixture of water and ACE for Colours liquid (10L:100ml) and soak the garment for 1 hour, helping the stain remover to get deep into the fabric.
  • Then, rinse and pop it into the wash with a capful of ACE for Colours liquid.

11. Mud Stains

Where there’s grass, there’s the risk of mud too – and wet mud isn’t the only type to stain. Dry mud on a hot day can still transfer onto your clothes if you fall over, so here’s how you can get mud stains out of your clothes safely:

  • If the mud is still wet, leave it to dry and then remove any large clumps with your hands or gently with an old toothbrush.

Top Tip: Be gentle so you don’t push the stain further into the fabric.

  • Then, add a capful of ACE for Colours liquid to your machine washing cycle on a cool temperature setting and this will help remove the stubborn marks!

12. Pollen Stains

Another hazard you might not be aware of in your garden this summer is pollen – and we’re not talking about hay fever! Even though it’s nice to get up close and personal to these beautiful blooms, the yellow pollen can be hard to remove from clothes. Here’s how:

  • Don’t rub the pollen! See if you can try and shake some of the excess off first before soaking the garment in 10L of cold water for around 60 minutes.

Top Tip: Add 100ml of ACE for Colours liquid to help pre-treat the garment in stain remover.

  • Next, rinse the item of clothing and add your washing machine along with a capful of ACE for Colours liquid and your usual detergent. Start the wash straight away.
  • Hang it outside to dry and voila!
