We know that some people think that once you’re past the age of twelve you shouldn’t really be making blanket forts anymore. Well those people are wrong. You are never too old to make a blanket fort. It is one of the simple joys in life that can make a day that go from horribly bad to totally epic – once you crawl inside the whole world seems that little bit better. And you don’t need lots of materials to make one. Go simple or go for full-on luxury; there are blanket fort recipes to suit the building stocks of everyone.
The Quick and Easy Fort
You will need:
2-4 chairs
1 double bedsheet
String
Cushions
Method:
Clear a space in the room (not too near the door or else your fort might not last long…) and place the chairs in a square (for the four chairs), or far apart (for the two). Drape bedsheet over the top and tie the ends of it onto the legs of the chairs with your string. Place cushions inside and relax.
Top tip:
Place it so one side is against a wall and you’ll have somewhere to lean.
The Slightly Less Quick and Easy Fort
You will need:
2 chairs
1 curtain rail
2 double bedsheets
String
Cushions
Fairy lights
Pegs
Method:
As before, clear a space in the room (again not too near the door or else your fort might not last long…) and place the two chairs) about a metre and a half away from a window with a curtain rail. Tie one corner of each bedsheet onto the middle of the curtain rail (close the curtains for atmosphere). Peg the sheets together along one long side. Tie the end of the sheets not attached to the rail onto the back of the chairs, making sure that there is enough drape to make walls. Unpeg a little of the join you made to make a door. Plug in fairy lights, place cushions inside and relax.
The Mega-Luxury-I-Never-Want-To-Take-It-Down Fort
You will need:
2 chairs
1-2 curtain rails
Fluffy duvets
As many bedsheets as you can find
Giant floor cushions
Fairy lights
Lots of pegs
Snacks
Hot chocolate (in a cup with a lid…)
Reading books
Colouring books
Felt Tips
Method:
Make as with the Slightly Less Quick and Easy Fort, only this time wider depending on how many bedsheets you have (peg together as needed). Ideally it will take up almost the whole room. Once done fill the fort with snacks, fairy lights (as many as possible (wrap them around the chair legs, peg them onto the bedsheet ceiling etc)), cushions (as many as possible), duvets, colouring books… Essentially anything and everything you can think of that might help you to create a sanctuary from the real world. Move in. Refuse to ever come out.
